Ready-to-Eat Food Packaging and Retort Pouch Sealing

Ready-to-eat Indian food has changed the way consumers purchase and prepare meals. Products such as curries, paneer gravies, soups, rice dishes and complete meal combinations allow consumers to enjoy familiar foods with significantly less preparation time.

The growth of this category has also changed the requirements for food packaging. A ready-to-eat meal cannot simply be placed in a conventional pouch and shipped to a customer. The packaging must protect the food from contamination, withstand handling and transportation, maintain product integrity and work with the food preservation process used by the manufacturer.

This is why packaging technology has become an important part of the ready-to-eat food industry.

When people search for MTR Packed Food, they may be looking for information about the type of packaged meals available in the market, how these products achieve convenience and shelf stability, or what packaging technology is used for similar ready-to-eat foods. MTR Foods’ own ready-to-eat range includes products such as soups, vegetable curries, paneer gravies and rice items, illustrating the variety of foods that fall within this category.

For food manufacturers, the more important question is what happens behind the package: how are ready-to-eat meals packed so that they can be safely stored, transported and consumed later?

This guide explains the packaging process, the role of retort pouches, the importance of seal integrity and the machinery considerations manufacturers should understand before selecting a packaging solution.

What Is Ready-to-Eat Food Packaging?

Ready-to-eat food packaging is the combination of packaging materials, filling, sealing, processing and quality-control practices used to protect prepared food until it reaches the consumer.

Unlike dry packaged foods, ready-to-eat products often contain:

 • Water
 • Gravies
 • Oils
 • Spices
 • Vegetables
 • Lentils
 • Dairy ingredients
 • Meat or protein ingredients

These characteristics make packaging more demanding.

A pouch containing a dry spice mix has very different requirements from a pouch containing a high-moisture curry.

The packaging system therefore has to be selected according to the product formulation, consistency, processing method, pouch structure and expected distribution conditions.

Why Shelf Life Is Important for Ready-to-Eat Food

Shelf life is especially important for packaged meals because the product may travel through several stages before consumption.

A typical supply chain can involve:

Processing → Manufacturing → Packaging → Warehouse → Distributor → Retailer → Consumer

During this journey, the package must remain intact.

Packaging failure can result in:

 • Leakage
 • Loss of product quality
 • Contamination
 • Reduced shelf life
 • Product rejection
 • Transportation losses
 • Customer complaints

For manufacturers selling products across multiple states or exporting food internationally, reliable packaging becomes even more important.

How Retort Pouches Are Used for Ready-to-Eat Meals

Retort pouches are flexible packages designed to withstand controlled thermal processing after filling and sealing.

Their multilayer construction provides protection against environmental factors while allowing the finished package to remain lightweight and relatively compact.

A simplified ready-to-eat retort packaging workflow is:

Food preparation

Filling into retort-grade pouch

Pouch sealing

Retort processing

Cooling

Inspection and quality control

Storage and distribution

The exact processing conditions depend on the product, formulation, pouch structure and validated process used by the manufacturer.

This distinction is important: a retort pouch itself does not automatically make food shelf-stable. The packaging material, sealing quality and validated thermal process must work together.

Why Seal Quality Matters in Ready-to-Eat Food

One of the most overlooked parts of ready-to-eat packaging is the seal.

A pouch can have an excellent barrier structure, but if the seal is inconsistent, the package may fail.

Potential problems include:

Leakage

Liquid or semi-liquid products can escape through weak or incomplete seals.

Contamination

A compromised seal can allow unwanted external contamination.

Loss of Shelf Stability

The integrity of the sealed package is part of maintaining the controlled environment required after processing.

Product Rejection

Manufacturers may need to reject packages showing visible seal defects or other quality problems.

This is why manufacturers need a sealing system capable of producing consistent results across production batches.

What Types of Food Can Be Packed in Retort Pouches?

Retort pouch packaging is suitable for a wide range of prepared foods, subject to appropriate product and process validation.

Indian Curries

Products such as:

 • Paneer gravies
 • Dal-based dishes
 • Vegetable curries
 • Rajma
 • Chole
 • Regional curry preparations

can require packaging capable of handling moisture, oils and sauces.

Rice-Based Meals

Ready-to-eat rice products can include:

 • Biryani
 • Jeera rice
 • Vegetable rice
 • Regional rice preparations

The packaging system needs to account for the physical characteristics of the food as well as the required processing conditions.

Soups

Soups and other liquid foods require particular attention to filling accuracy and seal cleanliness because product contamination in the seal area can compromise package integrity.

Paneer Gravies

Paneer-based products are an important category in Indian ready-to-eat food.

Examples include:

 • Paneer Butter Masala
 • Paneer Masala
 • Kadai Paneer
 • Other paneer gravy preparations

MTR Packed Food and the Growth of the Ready-to-Eat Category

The popularity of brands offering ready-to-eat meals demonstrates the wider consumer shift toward convenient prepared food.

MTR Foods, for example, currently lists ready-to-eat soups, vegetable curries, paneer gravies and rice items within its product range.

The important takeaway for manufacturers is not the brand itself, but the range of food formats that consumers now expect to be available in convenient packaged forms.

This creates opportunities for food businesses producing:

 • Regional Indian meals
 • Private-label ready meals
 • Institutional food
 • Export-oriented Indian cuisine
 • Contract-packed meals
 • Specialty vegetarian meals
 • Protein-based ready meals

As the category expands, packaging machinery must become increasingly adaptable to different products and pouch formats.

What Manufacturers Should Consider Before Choosing a Packaging Machine

Choosing machinery based only on production speed can create problems later.

Manufacturers should evaluate at least six factors.

1. Product Consistency

Is the product a thin liquid, thick gravy, semi-solid meal or combination of solids and liquid?

The answer affects filling and sealing requirements.

2. Pouch Size

Different retail pack sizes may require different machine configurations.

3. Production Volume

A small food business may have very different requirements from an established manufacturer producing thousands of pouches per shift.

4. Packaging Material

The machine must be compatible with the selected pouch structure and sealing requirements.

5. Hygiene

Food-contact and packaging equipment should be designed to support appropriate cleaning and hygienic production practices.

6. Future Expansion

A machine should ideally support the manufacturer’s expected production growth rather than only today’s requirements.

Why Stainless Steel Construction Matters

Food processing environments involve regular cleaning, moisture and exposure to food ingredients.

Stainless steel construction is therefore widely preferred for food-processing machinery because it offers:

 • Corrosion resistance
 • Durability
 • Easier cleaning
 • A hygienic equipment surface
 • Suitability for demanding production environments

For manufacturers producing ready-to-eat food at commercial scale, machine construction is an important part of the overall hygiene and maintenance strategy.

The Role of Sealing Equipment in Product Quality

The sealing stage connects packaging technology with actual production quality.

A suitable sealing machine should provide controlled and repeatable sealing conditions rather than relying heavily on manual adjustments.

Important considerations include:

 • Consistent sealing temperature
 • Appropriate sealing pressure
 • Correct pouch positioning
 • Clean sealing areas
 • Repeatable machine settings
 • Routine inspection of finished seals

Manufacturers should establish their own quality-control procedures and validate sealing and thermal-processing conditions for their specific product and packaging combination.

This is particularly important because there is no single machine setting that is automatically correct for every food product or pouch material.

Common Mistakes in Ready-to-Eat Food Packaging

Choosing Machinery Based Only on Speed

High output is not useful if rejection rates increase.

Manufacturers should consider the relationship between throughput, consistency and quality control.

Ignoring the Product Characteristics

A thick curry, soup and mixed rice meal behave differently during filling and sealing.

Using the Wrong Pouch Structure

The packaging material must be selected according to the product and processing requirements.

Neglecting Seal Inspection

Regular seal inspection can help identify problems before defective packages reach distribution.

Treating Retort Processing as a One-Size-Fits-All Process

Thermal processing needs to be developed and validated for the specific food product, packaging configuration and process requirements.

How Manufacturers Can Improve Ready-to-Eat Packaging Quality

A strong packaging operation combines equipment, materials, people and process controls.

Manufacturers can improve consistency by:

 1. Selecting appropriate retort-grade packaging materials.
 2. Establishing validated filling and sealing procedures.
 3. Maintaining clean sealing areas.
 4. Monitoring critical machine parameters.
 5. Performing routine seal inspections.
 6. Training operators properly.
 7. Maintaining equipment according to manufacturer recommendations.
 8. Documenting quality checks and production parameters.

This approach creates a more reliable packaging process than simply purchasing a faster machine.

Retort Packaging for Domestic and Export Markets

Ready-to-eat food manufacturers increasingly serve customers beyond their immediate local market.

Retort packaging can be particularly useful where products need to travel long distances because lightweight flexible packaging can reduce bulk compared with some rigid packaging formats.

For export-oriented businesses, manufacturers also need to consider:

 • Destination-market requirements
 • Food-contact packaging compliance
 • Labelling requirements
 • Transportation conditions
 • Storage conditions
 • Product-specific shelf-life validation

Packaging should therefore be considered as part of the complete export strategy rather than as an isolated production step.

Choosing a Retort Pouch Sealer for Your Food Business

The right machine depends on the manufacturer’s actual application.

A business producing a relatively small range of ready-to-eat meals may have different requirements from a high-volume food manufacturer serving multiple markets.

Before purchasing, ask:

What products will be packed?

List the actual products rather than choosing a machine based on a generic category.

What is the required output?

Estimate realistic production requirements rather than selecting equipment solely on its maximum advertised capacity.

What pouch materials and sizes will be used?

Confirm compatibility before finalising the machine.

What level of hygiene is required?

Food-grade construction may be particularly important for manufacturers operating in controlled food-processing environments.

What will production look like in three to five years?

Consider whether the selected machine can support future expansion.

Building a Reliable Ready-to-Eat Food Packaging Line

A successful ready-to-eat food packaging operation is rarely dependent on one machine alone.

The overall workflow can include:

Food Preparation

Product Filling

Pouch Handling

Sealing

Retort Processing

Cooling

Inspection

Secondary Packaging

Storage & Distribution

Each stage contributes to the final quality of the product.

This is why food manufacturers should evaluate their packaging line as a complete system rather than selecting equipment based on one keyword or one specification.

Conclusion

The success of ready-to-eat food depends on much more than the recipe. Packaging has to protect the product from the point of production through storage, transportation and final consumption.

The popularity of ready-to-eat categories represented by products such as MTR Packed Food demonstrates the growing consumer demand for convenient packaged Indian meals. For manufacturers entering or expanding in this market, the focus should be on building a complete packaging process that combines appropriate pouch materials, accurate filling, reliable sealing, validated processing and consistent quality control.

A well-selected retort pouch sealer can become an important part of that system by helping manufacturers achieve repeatable pouch sealing for products such as curries, gravies, soups and ready-to-eat meals.

Shruti Flexipack provides retort pouch sealing solutions for manufacturers looking to develop reliable packaging operations for modern ready-to-eat food applications.

Flexible Pouch packaging has gained a lot of popularity in recent times, it is made up of monolayer, multilayer, co-extruded, barrier film, foil, and spout and cap fitments such type of various options. that support all types of products which needs packaging. Pouches are often designed with the flexible needs of the consumer in mind. The pouch packages are usually easy to store, easy to open and reuse and consist of flexible sizing options to fit most of the product and this is achieved with pouch filling and sealing machines

Pouches take less space, they are easy to transport and handle, light weight, can be stored at ambient temperatures and products maintain their freshness for long periods of time hence it is the most efficient option for both the manufacturers as well as the consumers.

What is an Automatic Pouch Filling Machine?

An Automatic Pouch Filling Machine is a packaging system used to fill and seal the preformed pouches.

The popularity of Automatic Pouch Filling Machines is high due to the immense growth of packaged product demand.

What are the Advantages of Using a Pouch Filler Machine?

Now, I have talked about how automatic pouch filler machines are gaining popularity but do you know what is the reason behind this?

Here below are 5 pouch filling machine benefits that can help increase your business’s profitability:

 • Saving Material Waste:

One of the biggest advantages of automatic pouch filler machines over other machines is that setup and changeover can be completed with little to no waste. During the testing phase, empty pouches can be used again and again until the machine is put into production which saves the material that would have been wasted during sampling. Saving production material cuts down the business’s overall production cost.

 • Versatility:

A manufacturing business can manufacture various products and in various shapes, sizes and weights and it needs such a packaging system that can efficiently package any and all products. And Pouch Fillers gives you this option, It helps in accurately packaging of quantities like 10 gm to 1000 gm packing with using some change parts. Every filled pouch can be weighed before sealing and you can meet weighing norms.

 • Efficiency:

Humans are not perfect and prone to mistakes, manual packaging is time-consuming and prone to errors which will lead to inefficiencies. However, with the help of AI assisted packing you can expect efficiency and improved levels of production that will help you meet your deadline faster.

 • Save Labour costs:

With the help of automatic pouch filling machines, you can cut down on labour costs by automating your packaging process. Other than that, it is obvious that a worker might want to take personal leaves or sick leaves which can again hamper manual production but pouch filling machines can work every day with just a low cost maintenance.

 • Ease of use:

Generally speaking, most businesses and MSME’s or startups won’t find workers who are skilled enough to operate complex packaging systems but the Automatic Pouch filling machines completely negates this problem as it uses PLC based technology, and not much manual input is required for efficient production.

Conclusion

The Top 3 Questions You Need to Ask Yourself Before Buying an Automatic Pouch Filler

 1. How Much up front investment can I afford to make?
 2. What are my business’s needs?
 3. How will the Packaging system help my business’s efficiency?

A vertical form filling sealing machine which is commonly known as a VFFS Machine is a type of automated assembly-line product packaging Machine system commonly used in the Food Industry for better packaging. The food industry is the place where this packaging system is found the most, a wide variety of other industries also use it for their products such as Pharma, Dairy, Cosmetics, Chemical and hardware.

This Filling System on this machine will be useful for packaging both solid as well as liquid Products. The vertical FFS machine forms side, centre seal, special formats of flexible plastic pouches out of a flat roll of packaging material, while it simultaneously fills the bags with product. .

How does a VFFS machine work?

The Vertical FFS machines’ process can be categorised into 7 processes:-

 • Film mounting & unwind:

A single sheet of film material rolled around a core, is mounted on shaft which has positive drive. This roll is pulled by film transport belts, which signals an unwinding mechanism. Unwinding length is controlled by sensors.

 • Film tension cum unwinding mechanism:

An arm located at the rear of the VFFS packaging machine passes over the unwound film. The arm moves up and down to keep the film under tension to ensure that the film will not loose or wander from side to side as it is moving continuously.

 • Batch printing:

Online batch printing mechanism can be mounted in this assembly to print batch details, price and DOM-Expiry date.

 • Film tracking and positioning:

Once the film has passed under the sensor, it travels past the registration camera/ print mark sensor which helps to keep the film length cutting positioned correctly so the film will be cut in the appropriate spot. It will ensure printed artwork at the correct position on the pouch.

 • Bag forming:

The film sheet then enters a forming tube assembly which folds and edges match or overlaps to form a shape of a tube. Vertical sealing bar heats the material to create a tube-like structure which forms the basis of the product package.

 • Bag filling and sealing:

Top of the first pouch and bottom of the next pouch is sealed by a horizontal sealer. The product is then filled into the package which is a tube like structure by this point and all side sealed bags/pouches will be cut and separated from each other.

 • Pouch discharge or take off:

Formed, filled and sealed pouches cut into individual packets and ready to dispatch. These pouches are taken off by a belt conveyor.

What are the Different Types of Vertical FFS machines?

Liquid Packaging machines are more efficient in ways of filling liquids by giving accuracy, speed and leak proof sealing or capping.

How does a liquid packaging machine work?

A liquid packaging machine which is sometimes referred to as a flow filling machine is generally used to fill products with different liquid viscosities into various rigid containers or flexible material through volumetric or quantitative filling. Manufacturers need good features that help them in their production process to speed up the packaging and only the best quality Liquid Packaging Machines provide it.

Different types of Liquid Packaging Machines are available and are unique in nature, but most work on the different principles, depending on liquid properties, expected accuracy and speed. Machines fill a specific amount of liquid into each pack at a certain speed depending on the machine’s automation settings.

What Makes a Good Liquid Packaging Machine?

Here are some of the elements that the best Liquid packaging Machine has,

 • One of the key aspects of a good Liquid Packaging Machine is that it requires the shortest amount of time to deliver the given liquid to help manufacturers be more productive and meet the high market demands
 • The Packaging Machine must also be flexible and adaptable to a wide variety of containers, closures, labels, and products
 • A Good Packaging machine must have components that can be changed, replaced and fixed quickly, toolless changeover
 • It should be up to the standards of the Food Safety Modernization Act, and compatible for all licences.
 • The Machine must handle multiple packaging operations such as feeding, cleaning, filling, capping, labelling, batch printing and such.

How to Choose the Right Liquid Packaging Machine for Your Needs?

One of the most common questions among manufacturers is how to buy a good liquid packaging machine as per their requirements?

To this, first note down what are your needs in terms of Liquid Packaging machines, here are some of the different types of liquid packaging machines and best qualities of a good liquid packaging machine.

Automatic container feeding:

In the Automatic liquid packaging machine, the containers travel through a power conveyor system to the filling station. This is known as a bottle unscrambler machine. Here everything is automated from container feeding to dispensing of liquid by quantitative or volumetric filling methods.

Rotary Liquid Filler:

The Rotary Packaging machine can come in 10, 25, 50, 100, or more filling/capping heads, and their advantage is that machines are sturdy, continuous motion and they fill containers at fast speeds, allowing your packaging line to produce far greater numbers of containers per minute.

How Can a Rotary Liquid Filler help your Business? Click Here to read about it

Inline/linear Liquid Filler:

As the name itself suggests, the inline liquid packaging system uses a continuous moving line of the conveyor belt, in order to fill the packages. But containers will be held on the conveyor just below the filling nozzles during filling activity. These machines are available in 2,4,6 and 8 filling heads. The advantage of linear machines is cost-effectiveness and easy adjustments could be made to fit various containers.

Vacuum Filler liquid packaging machines:

These types of machinery are used to fill products that are paste like or of high viscosity. Vacuum fillers with vane cell feed systems or vacuum feeding are commonly used for viscous products. The products are transported with the aid of a hopper with a feeding device, a vane cell feed system under a vacuum and appropriate volume expulsion in the pump housing. This is basically a volumetric feed principle, which means that a certain weight is defined via a volume. In addition to the vane cell feed systems.

Vacuum Filler liquid packaging machines and their uses in packaging

Overflow Filler Liquid packaging machines:

Overflow Filling Machines are used to fill a wide range of water-thin to low-viscosity liquids into most containers. Overflow Fillers provide the same cosmetic fill level, making them ideal for filling transparent containers that must have a consistent fill level and give more aesthetic value to the packaging and the products. It is an alternative to the volumetric fill of gravity filling machines. Typical example of this filling is distilled spirits bottle or clear plastic beverage bottles.

Factors To Consider Before Buying A Liquid Packaging Machine

Here Below listed are 4 factors to consider before buying a liquid packaging machine:

What specific type of liquid you are filling:

It is Important to question yourself before buying a liquid filling machine about what liquid products you will be handling. Different machines handle different liquids, for example:

 • The mineral water packing machine is used for packing water, drinks and artificial juices
 • The pepsi/coke like beverages need different technology to pack carbonated drinks
 • Pesticides have different bottles and demands

What Unique requirements does your liquid product have:

There are liquids with high viscosity, low viscosity, and dynamic viscosity, some might even contain particles. What unique feature your product has will determine the machine you need

 • Water, milk, and milk products are gravity flow liquids
 • Cut off mechanism required for viscous liquids
 • Corrosive properties to be considered while selecting contact material.
 • Sometimes liquid and particles need to dispense using different filling systems

The type of containers that you use:

Different liquid packaging machines will be used for handling different types of containers such as,

 • Overflow filling machines are more suitable for clear containers
 • The sachet packer with syringe Filler for liquid packing in flexible packaging material
 • Vacuum filling needs glass container or sturdy/heavy container
 • High value liquids need to fill on weight basis

Production requirements:

Your desired production requirements will determine the ideal packaging machine.

 • If the demand is high then a machine with high speed but less change parts will be suitable
 • If the demand is moderate, but multiple products or various container shapes and fill volume then a cost-saving machine would be the best choice

Conclusion:

Finding the right Liquid Packaging Machine can be a very difficult task but knowing your product and the market’s requirements will certainly help to make things easy. It is advisable that you find a liquid packaging machine manufacturer who knows the machines in more detail as they can help you select the best liquid packaging machine available.

]]>
A sachet is a small plastic or paper or cloth packet that contains a small amount of liquid or powder product.
Sachets are usually smaller sealed flexible bags made from various flexible packaging materials. Sachets are manufactured using materials such as aluminium foil, paper, cellulosic, plastic and cloth. Sachets are a part of a compact package, sealed from all sides, unitized or single dose packing used for retail sale or sampling.

What is in a Sachet?

Sachet Packaging
Sachets are most likely used to contain products in the form of liquid, powder, or pastes, such as tea, coffee, detergents, shampoo, mouth fresheners, ketchup, spices, cream, lubricant, oil, sugar, and sauces.

The major users of this form of packaging are sectors such as cosmetic & personal care, food & beverage, and the pharmaceutical industry. The reason that it is used so extensively is that sachets are cheaper than large size packets and take up less storage space, easy to buy due to their very less cost. The Sachets are used for packaging products that are generally targeted toward, lower income groups such as. poor or middle class consumers who are price-sensitive and would always prefer a cheaper form of the product.

How Sachet Machines Work?

Sachet Packing Machine ModelThe packaging roll is installed in a given roll mounting shaft which has roll unwinding fitment. Unwinding length is controlled by sensors. The roll is mounted on the top side of the machine. In mechanical models roll unwinding is done by pouch length pulling rollers. After unwinding the film roll pass through one folding collar where it takes the form of a tube. The Machine can be attached to an online printer also known as a date stamping machine. The date is stamped by fitting the film over the sliding rollers.

The said Film is under constant pressure to make sure that the film stays in its place while the machine is doing vertical sealing and pulling. Pouch length is decided by the print mark which is printed on the packing film and censored by the print mark sensor.

There is a pair of round horizontal sealers which has a cutting knife of various designs as per pouch requirement. Horizontal sealing can be of different patterns like line type or diamond type impression. During this unwinding, forming, tube formation and horizontal sealing process products are filled in the formed tube just before the horizontal sealing.

Depending on products like cup filler for granular products, and syringe filler for liquid products, a suitable filling system will be fitted on a sachet packer machine. Sachets can be side seals or centre seal designs. Side seal designs have 3 side seal or 4 side seal patterns.

This selection of design depends on market trends in that particular industry.

The Advantages of Sachet Machine

Now you may be wondering why use a sachet machine for packaging? Here is the answer:

 • Affordable:

Sachets are far more of an economical solution than traditional methods of packaging different products in multiuse packs. This is due to a various number of reasons, *packaging cost of sachets is far lower than plastic/glass bottles and containers; tubes * sachets take up far less space and less weight reducing storage cost * Product reach and customer base increase as anyone can afford to buy sachet and use it.

 • Customisable:

Every brand wants to make its product attractive and packaging is a great way for the brands to market their product. It is easier to print directly onto sachets to make them attractive. Hence By customising your sachet design, you are promoting your business to the buyers.

 • Easier Transporting and Storage:

As the size and weight of the sachets are on the lower side, the costs associated with secondary packing, product handling, transporting and storing the product are reduced. This reduces the manufactures operating cost.

Disadvantages of Use of a Sachet Machine

 • Bad for Environment:

As the sachets are a one time used pack, once used people tend to throw them in the garbage. Due to its small size, no one is ready to collect it and recycle it as it’s not cost-effective. For sachet making packaging material is mainly multilayer laminate and it will not degrade for years when it goes into landfills. The result of such a huge quantity of sachets is bad for the environment. The frequency of the product being purchased by the consumer is increased. This leads to an increase in carbon footprint.

 • Use of product:

Sachet is a small size which contains less amount of product compared to plastic or metal bottle, container or cans. Products stick to the inner side of the flexible packing material and are not dispensed fully. Sometimes these sachets are difficult to open through provided cuts and products spills and loss.

 • Need automatic machines:

The bulk packaging can be done manually during the starting phase but sachet packing can be done on the packaging machine only. Filling small quantities and sealing small sachets is a tedious job. So investment in packaging machines is required.

Conclusion:

For any product based business sachets can be a great way to attract new customers. sachets give consumers a chance to experiment and find out what works and what doesn’t about your product and they can start as a small consumer buying only 1 sachet and then move on to become a permanent customer.

Consumers are more sceptical to buy a product in a large quantity before knowing how they feel about it. Investing in a Sachet Packing Machine lets your product reach out to more people and Increases your market share.
