Flexible Pouch packaging has gained a lot of popularity in recent times, it is made up of monolayer, multilayer, co-extruded, barrier film, foil, and spout and cap fitments such type of various options. that support all types of products which needs packaging. Pouches are often designed with the flexible needs of the consumer in mind. The pouch packages are usually easy to store, easy to open and reuse and consist of flexible sizing options to fit most of the product and this is achieved with pouch filling and sealing machines

Pouches take less space, they are easy to transport and handle, light weight, can be stored at ambient temperatures and products maintain their freshness for long periods of time hence it is the most efficient option for both the manufacturers as well as the consumers.

What is an Automatic Pouch Filling Machine?

An Automatic Pouch Filling Machine is a packaging system used to fill and seal the preformed pouches.

The popularity of Automatic Pouch Filling Machines is high due to the immense growth of packaged product demand.

What are the Advantages of Using a Pouch Filler Machine?

Now, I have talked about how automatic pouch filler machines are gaining popularity but do you know what is the reason behind this?

Here below are 5 pouch filling machine benefits that can help increase your business’s profitability:

  • Saving Material Waste:

One of the biggest advantages of automatic pouch filler machines over other machines is that setup and changeover can be completed with little to no waste. During the testing phase, empty pouches can be used again and again until the machine is put into production which saves the material that would have been wasted during sampling. Saving production material cuts down the business’s overall production cost.

  • Versatility:

A manufacturing business can manufacture various products and in various shapes, sizes and weights and it needs such a packaging system that can efficiently package any and all products. And Pouch Fillers gives you this option, It helps in accurately packaging of quantities like 10 gm to 1000 gm packing  with using some change parts. Every filled pouch can be weighed before sealing and you can meet weighing norms.

  • Efficiency:

Humans are not perfect and prone to mistakes, manual packaging is time-consuming and prone to errors which will lead to inefficiencies. However, with the help of AI assisted packing you can expect efficiency and improved levels of production that will help you meet your deadline faster.

  • Save Labour costs:

With the help of automatic pouch filling machines, you can cut down on labour costs by automating your packaging process. Other than that, it is obvious that a worker might want to take personal leaves or sick leaves which can again hamper manual production but pouch filling machines can work every day with just a low cost maintenance.

  • Ease of use:

Generally speaking, most businesses and MSME’s or startups won’t find workers who are skilled enough to operate complex packaging systems but the Automatic Pouch filling machines completely negates this problem as it uses PLC based technology, and not much manual input is required for efficient production.

Conclusion

A vertical form filling sealing machine which is commonly known as a VFFS Machine is a type of automated assembly-line product packaging Machine system commonly used in the Food Industry for better packaging. The food industry is the place where this packaging system is found the most, a wide variety of other industries also use it for their products such as Pharma, Dairy, Cosmetics, Chemical and hardware.

This Filling System on this machine will be useful for packaging both solid as well as liquid Products. The vertical FFS machine forms side, centre seal, special formats of flexible plastic pouches out of a flat roll of packaging material, while it simultaneously fills the bags with product. .

How does a VFFS machine work?

The Vertical FFS machines’ process can be categorised into 7 processes:-

  • Film mounting & unwind:

A single sheet of film material rolled around a core, is mounted on shaft which has positive drive. This roll is pulled by film transport belts, which signals an unwinding mechanism. Unwinding length is controlled by sensors.

  • Film tension cum unwinding mechanism:

An arm located at the rear of the VFFS packaging machine passes over the unwound film. The arm moves up and down to keep the film under tension to ensure that the film will not loose or wander from side to side as it is moving continuously.

  • Batch printing:

Online batch printing mechanism can be mounted in this assembly to print batch details, price and DOM-Expiry date.

  • Film tracking and positioning:

Once the film has passed under the sensor, it travels past the registration camera/ print mark sensor which helps to keep the film length cutting positioned correctly so the film will be cut in the appropriate spot. It will ensure printed artwork at the correct position on the pouch.

  • Bag forming:

The film sheet then enters a forming tube assembly which folds and edges match or overlaps to form a shape of a tube. Vertical sealing bar heats the material to create a tube-like structure which forms the basis of the product package.

  • Bag filling and sealing:

Top of the first pouch and bottom of the next pouch is sealed by a horizontal sealer. The product is then filled into the package which is a tube like structure by this point and all side sealed bags/pouches will be cut and separated from each other.

  • Pouch discharge or take off:

Formed, filled and sealed pouches cut into individual packets and ready to dispatch. These pouches are taken off by a belt conveyor.

What are the Different Types of Vertical FFS machines?

Liquid filling machines are among the most popular equipment in the packaging industry, as there is a rise in various beverages and liquid products, and an increase in production demands which in turn needs good Liquid filling cum packaging machines. Liquid Packaging machines are more efficient in ways of filling liquids by giving accuracy, speed and leak proof sealing or capping.

How does a liquid packaging machine work?

A liquid packaging machine which is sometimes referred to as a flow filling machine is generally used to fill products with different liquid viscosities into various rigid containers or flexible material through volumetric or quantitative filling. Manufacturers need good features that help them in their production process to speed up the packaging and only the best quality Liquid Packaging Machines provide it.

Different types of Liquid Packaging Machines are available and are unique in nature, but most work on the different principles, depending on liquid properties, expected accuracy and speed. Machines fill a specific amount of liquid into each pack at a certain speed depending on the machine’s automation settings.

What Makes a Good Liquid Packaging Machine?

Here are some of the elements that the best Liquid packaging Machine has,

  • One of the key aspects of a good Liquid Packaging Machine is that it requires the shortest amount of time to deliver the given liquid to help manufacturers be more productive and meet the high market demands
  • The Packaging Machine must also be flexible and adaptable to a wide variety of containers, closures, labels, and products
  • A Good Packaging machine must have components that can be changed, replaced and fixed quickly, toolless changeover
  • It should be up to the standards of the Food Safety Modernization Act, and compatible for all licences.
  • The Machine must handle multiple packaging operations such as feeding, cleaning, filling, capping, labelling, batch printing and such.

How to Choose the Right Liquid Packaging Machine for Your Needs?

One of the most common questions among manufacturers is how to buy a good liquid packaging machine as per their requirements?

To this, first note down what are your needs in terms of Liquid Packaging machines, here are some of the different types of liquid packaging machines and best qualities of a good liquid packaging machine.

Automatic container feeding:

In the Automatic liquid packaging machine, the containers travel through a power conveyor system to the filling station. This is known as a bottle unscrambler machine. Here everything is automated from container feeding to dispensing of liquid by quantitative or volumetric filling methods.

Inline/linear Liquid Filler:

As the name itself suggests, the inline liquid packaging system uses a continuous moving line of the conveyor belt, in order to fill the packages. But containers will be held on the conveyor just below the filling nozzles during filling activity. These machines are available in 2,4,6 and 8 filling heads. The advantage of linear machines is cost-effectiveness and easy adjustments could be made to fit various containers.

Vacuum Filler liquid packaging machines:

These types of machinery are used to fill products that are paste like or of high viscosity. Vacuum fillers with vane cell feed systems or vacuum feeding are commonly used for viscous products. The products are transported with the aid of a hopper with a feeding device, a vane cell feed system under a vacuum and appropriate volume expulsion in the pump housing. This is basically a volumetric feed principle, which means that a certain weight is defined via a volume. In addition to the vane cell feed systems.

Overflow Filler Liquid packaging machines:

Overflow Filling Machines are used to fill a wide range of water-thin to low-viscosity liquids into most containers. Overflow Fillers provide the same cosmetic fill level, making them ideal for filling transparent containers that must have a consistent fill level and give more aesthetic value to the packaging and the products. It is an alternative to the volumetric fill of gravity filling machines. Typical example of this filling is distilled spirits bottle or clear plastic beverage bottles.

A sachet is a small plastic or paper or cloth packet that contains a small amount of liquid or powder product.
Sachets are usually smaller sealed flexible bags made from various flexible packaging materials. Sachets are manufactured using materials such as aluminium foil, paper, cellulosic, plastic and cloth. Sachets are a part of a compact package, sealed from all sides, unitized or single dose packing used for retail sale or sampling.

What is in a Sachet?

Sachet Packaging
Sachets are most likely used to contain products in the form of liquid, powder, or pastes, such as tea, coffee, detergents, shampoo, mouth fresheners, ketchup, spices, cream, lubricant, oil, sugar, and sauces.

The major users of this form of packaging are sectors such as cosmetic & personal care, food & beverage, and the pharmaceutical industry. The reason that it is used so extensively is that sachets are cheaper than large size packets and take up less storage space, easy to buy due to their very less cost. The Sachets are used for packaging products that are generally targeted toward, lower income groups such as. poor or middle class consumers who are price-sensitive and would always prefer a cheaper form of the product.

How Sachet Machines Work?

Sachet Packing Machine ModelThe packaging roll is installed in a given roll mounting shaft which has roll unwinding fitment. Unwinding length is controlled by sensors. The roll is mounted on the top side of the machine. In mechanical models roll unwinding is done by pouch length pulling rollers. After unwinding the film roll pass through one folding collar where it takes the form of a tube. The Machine can be attached to an online printer also known as a date stamping machine. The date is stamped by fitting the film over the sliding rollers.

The said Film is under constant pressure to make sure that the film stays in its place while the machine is doing vertical sealing and pulling. Pouch length is decided by the print mark which is printed on the packing film and censored by the print mark sensor.

There is a pair of round horizontal sealers which has a cutting knife of various designs as per pouch requirement. Horizontal sealing can be of different patterns like line type or diamond type impression. During this unwinding, forming, tube formation and horizontal sealing process products are filled in the formed tube just before the horizontal sealing.

Depending on products like cup filler for granular products, and syringe filler for liquid products, a suitable filling system will be fitted on a sachet packer machine. Sachets can be side seals or centre seal designs. Side seal designs have 3 side seal or 4 side seal patterns.

This selection of design depends on market trends in that particular industry.

The Advantages of Sachet Machine

Now you may be wondering why use a sachet machine for packaging? Here is the answer:

  • Affordable:

Sachets are far more of an economical solution than traditional methods of packaging different products in multiuse packs. This is due to a various number of reasons, *packaging cost of sachets is far lower than plastic/glass bottles and containers; tubes * sachets take up far less space and less weight reducing storage cost * Product reach and customer base increase as anyone can afford to buy sachet and use it.

  • Customisable:

Every brand wants to make its product attractive and packaging is a great way for the brands to market their product. It is easier to print directly onto sachets to make them attractive. Hence By customising your sachet design, you are promoting your business to the buyers.

  • Easier Transporting and Storage:

As the size and weight of the sachets are on the lower side, the costs associated with secondary packing, product handling, transporting and storing the product are reduced. This reduces the manufactures operating cost.

Disadvantages of Use of a Sachet Machine

  • Bad for Environment:

As the sachets are a one time used pack, once used people tend to throw them in the garbage. Due to its small size, no one is ready to collect it and recycle it as it’s not cost-effective. For sachet making packaging material is mainly multilayer laminate and it will not degrade for years when it goes into landfills. The result of such a huge quantity of sachets is bad for the environment. The frequency of the product being purchased by the consumer is increased. This leads to an increase in carbon footprint.

  • Use of product:

Sachet is a small size which contains less amount of product compared to plastic or metal bottle, container or cans. Products stick to the inner side of the flexible packing material and are not dispensed fully. Sometimes these sachets are difficult to open through provided cuts and products spills and loss.

  • Need automatic machines:

The bulk packaging can be done manually during the starting phase but sachet packing can be done on the packaging machine only. Filling small quantities and sealing small sachets is a tedious job. So investment in packaging machines is required.

Conclusion:

For any product based business sachets can be a great way to attract new customers. sachets give consumers a chance to experiment and find out what works and what doesn’t about your product and they can start as a small consumer buying only 1 sachet and then move on to become a permanent customer.

Consumers are more sceptical to buy a product in a large quantity before knowing how they feel about it. Investing in a Sachet Packing Machine lets your product reach out to more people and Increases your market share.

If you are looking for convenience, there is nothing better than stick pack packaging. Stick pack packaging can be very useful while creating a sample package, or adding single-serving size pouches to your product line. It is a unique way to package your products which helps to attract new customers for your products.

The Stick pack pouches are very similar to pouch pack packaging, however, it is very flexible in nature and is defined by their small size and narrow shape. The Stick pack packaging is used for products that need a convenient use on the go, it is mostly used for powders though occasionally some liquids, gels and semi-solid products. They are most ideally used for products that need packaging for single-serve applications, sample sizes and products that are stocked at the point of purchase at retailers.

As a result, they are used in a wide range of industries but especially in the food and pharma industries. The process of packaging is done with the help of specialised, single or multi track packaging machines. However, if you are a small or medium-scale manufacturer or from a start up industry, a single track machine is the best viable option for you.

How do traditional packaging machines work?

The traditional packaging machine uses a proven design in service that is being used for over 10 years. Most of them are used for packaging plastic containers or tin cans.

The drawback with these machines is that they take up a lot of capital upfront while installing and the maintenance cost is also high. On the other hand, it is not an economic option either as the cost of a multidose bulk pack, once the whole product is contaminated with open atmosphere and also takes more storage space for these containers.

These traditional packaging machines were not meant for unitised, one time, single dose packs specialisation and they were made on typical machines that available with no efficiency.

Why use a stick pack single track packaging machine?

The Demand for stick pack single track packaging is increasing as it is considered an economic as well as attractive option. As it is a small piece of packaging it uses less plastic and paper than other types of packaging, contributing to waste reduction.

It is an economic and efficient way of packaging as this stick pack single track packaging machine is used for a specialised purpose and for dedicated work. With the use of this single track packaging machine, the manufacturer’s production rates will increase and costs per item will decrease.

The stick pack is not only an efficient design for the end consumer, but also a great tool for the brand positioning. It is a strong packaging design that could represent a powerful marketing, unique visibility and production optimization tool for the company .

What is the Future of Stick Pack Single Track Packaging Machines in the Market?

Amidst the global pandemic, there have been a lot of speculations about the increase in popularity of stick pack packaging systems. Demand is likely to be sustained by increasing Industry trends in the food and pharmaceutical industry.

The most widely used material for the process is flexible packaging material which is made from heat sealable biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP), this is due to its lightweight and other features such as minimum damage during transit, preventing moisture accumulation, and environmental friendliness and BOPP sheets also acquire less electrostatic charge.
Other than BOPP, paper is a good alternative. Similar to BOPP, paper is extremely lightweight and enables manufacturers to save immensely on packaging costs.

Several end-use industries such as food & beverage and cosmetics are incorporating paper-based packaging solutions. Current trend is packaging materials should be recyclable and which are not made of multiple laminates of plastic films.

The Future of the Packaging Industry for stick packaging looks quite bright in accordance with the food industry as the food industry is set to have the most number of products that will benefit from using Stick Pack Single Track Packaging Machines. Several food items such as spices & condiments, sugar & salt, tea & coffee, chocolates, honey, various concentrates etc would be convenient for the end-user as well as be inexpensive for the manufacturer.

The need and necessity for flexible, robust and secure packaging solutions are increasing with rising online food purchases. As the online food purchasing industry is constantly growing, unitised packs are preferred, the prospects for stick packaging, in the long run, is also increasing.

It is a great time for Indian manufacturers to invest in Stick Pack Single Track Packaging Machines as the Asian market is slated to emerge as the fastest growing region in the global stick packaging landscape for the 2020-2030 assessment decade.

Conclusion:

The Stick pack machines are specialised and dedicated for a package; making it efficient in delivering the packaged products giving you a productive, manufacturing process and as it uses less plastic and paper than other types of packaging, it creates less waste thus bringing your overall cost down.

The 4 types of Retort Steam-based processes are used for cooked and ready to eat packed food products sterilizing

Retorts utilize steam-based processes. 4 kinds of steam-based processes are used in sterilizing food, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical products. Steam goes in both formats as direct heating media (for example, saturated steam) or as indirect heating media (steam-heated water used in a water immersion process). The different types of retort processes are:

  • Saturated Steam – direct heating through steam
  • Water Immersion (rotary and static) – indirect heating through steam
  • Water Spray (rotary and static) [Cascading water type is also included in this type] – indirect heating through steam
  • Steam-Air (rotary and static) – direct heating through steam

As in all forms of design and engineering, each of the processes has advantages and shortcomings. Each has tradeoffs, and it is the objective of this blog to generally define the processes.

Picking the Optimum Retort Sterilization Process

Let’s be transparent about all the facts here: No retort sterilization process is the best! There is no such thing as one type (or size) fits all. It depends on the mere application. Retort sterilization processes should certainly be evaluated in the same way. Which is the best process for the application? And, which process is ideal for a particular container?

Let’s study each one of them in detail to figure that out:

1. Saturated Steam Retort Process

Trade-Offs Using the Saturated Steam Process

Pros

Low Capital investment required, particularly with carbon steel retorts

Convenient to operate manually

Can potentially process most canned products

Cons

Venting uses a lot of steam and is not an economically feasible step. Consumes a lot of energy.

Inflexible – typically rigid and limited to processing heavy sidewall containers, such as heavy cans.

Most fragile containers, such as pouches, plastic bottles, and plastic jars, cannot be processed.

With the overpressure process retorts gaining popularity due to the introduction of new types of containers requiring overpressure sterilization, the old steam retort is hard to beat for its low capital investment, along with the simplicity of design and operation. If one has a limited capital budget and the current and future product mix is limited to cans, then saturated steam retorts may be the ideal best decision.

2. The Water Immersion Retort (Static or Rotary)

The water immersion process is the most extensively preferred method of sterilizing products using an overpressure process. The water immersion process is quite similar to a saturated steam process in which the product is isolated from any influence of cooling air – the product is submerged in water. But, it is different from the saturated steam retort in which air is introduced into the vessel during sterilization.

Overpressure is provided by inducing air or steam on top of the water. In some instances, the air is added to the steam (which in turn heats the air). The heated air then agitates the water as it flows to the surface and in turn serves to pressurize the processing load.

The water immersion retort is versatile in its operation. Because it is an overpressure process, the machine can potentially handle most, if not all of the fragile containers.

The water immersion retort had, at one time, held a secondary position in popularity to the other types of overpressure retorts. However, in recent years, this machine has mounted a strong revival in popularity – particularly for all the products that needed a rotary process.

While the initial investment is much steeper(excessive) than the other retorts, it is the ideal machine for rotary processes.

3. The Water Spray Retort (Static or Rotary)

The saturated steam process is indeed one of the oldest methods of in-container sterilization. Since air is considered an insulating medium, saturating the retort vessel with steam is an essential requirement of the process. It is inherent in the process that the total amount of air would be evacuated from the retort by flooding the vessel with steam and allowing the air to escape through vent valves. There is no overpressure during the sterilization phases of this process since air is not allowed to enter the vessel at any time during any sterilization step.

However, there may be air-overpressure applied during the cooling procedures to prevent container deformation.

The water spray process is also an overpressure process, like water immersion, except that in this case the product is exposed to the influence of the overpressure air. It is quite similar to the saturated steam process in which; steam is the driving force for reaching the center of the packed load. But, the water spray process is different from saturated steam in which air is introduced into the vessel during sterilization.

Overpressure is then provided by inducing air (or steam) into the retort. To overcome the insulating effects of the air, the spray nozzles vaporize the steam and then mix the steam with the air. Some water spray retorts are also manufactured with a rotary option.

The water immersion retort is versatile in its operation. Because it is an overpressure process, the machine can potentially handle most, if not all of the fragile containers.

The water spray retort has become one of the most popular retort machines in the USA, primarily because it has the best ratio of flexibility to the investment enforced. The machines have a relatively simple design for an overpressure process and are an ideal buy for static processes. Low RPM rotary processes are also compatible with this machine, adding to its flexibility. (It should be noted that processes over 10 RPMs may experience increased “Come Up Times,” due to thermal distribution issues that may be inherent in the machine’s layout.

4. The Steam-Air Retort (Static or Rotary)

The Steam-Air process is also an overpressure process, like water immersion, except that in this case the product is exposed to the influence of the overpressure air. Because overpressure air enters the retort with steam, and steam is the only present heating medium, a large fan is used as a driving force to mix the steam with air, and to prevent cold spots in the machine. The fan is used in affiliation with a baffling arrangement inside of the retort to channel the heated steam-air mix to the center of the retort load.

Some Steam-Air retorts are also manufactured with a rotary option. The Steam-Air retort is versatile in its operation. Because it is an overpressure process, the machine can generally handle most, if not all of the fragile containers.

Stick pack Single Track Packaging Machines are most commonly used for packing powder, granule or liquid into a centre seal pouch. There is only one track for the product to enter the packaging line, hence the name, single-track machine.

Stick packaging refers to a long and narrow pouch that resembles a stick in looks, that became popular when CPG companies learned how easy it was to open and pour a powder mix into a bottle of water. In India, you will find such packaging for sugar, salt, medicinal powders, powder soaps, dehydrated juice mixes, chocolates, honey etc.

Since the genesis of the Crystal Light stick pack into beverages, there have been many similar versions available on the market in both length, width and fill weight which all run on fully automatic stick pack machines. Single track or Multi Track stick packaging machines are of specific vertical form, fill and seal machines with specific widths that are predefined in the machine that will form the “stick pack”.

There is a shift in paradigm On a global scale in the packaging industry, as the demand for flexible packaging solutions is acquiring momentum. This shift in the trend is likely to shape the future of stick packaging and contribute to the growth curve. For start ups, stick pack single track machines are economical options, the demand for this form of packaging is increasing and the preference for economical packaging solutions will just contribute more towards it.

Here is a step by step process of how Stick Pack Machines work

Film Transport & Unwind:

Full automatic machine use a single sheet of packaging film material which is referred to as rollstock which is wrapped around its core. The film is unwound from the film reel and positioned at the rear part of the machine. One web free roller table guides the packing roll till the folding collar of the machine where it folds in tubular shape. Print mark sensor and online batch printer is fixed in this travel length only. The movement of the cross seal jaws, located at the front of the stick pack machine, which decided pouch length facilitates this film unwinding process.

Optional Printing:

If the machine is equipped with a date-stamping device that engraves the date or any other relevant details on the packaging, then the film is fed around a registration roller. This helps to register the position of the date stamp on the package in relation to the horizontal seal of the product package. The printmark on the film is used to decide the position of printing on the film. You can use friction coder, TTC type coder, Thermal inkjet or continuous inkjet printer are used for this online batch coding.

Film Tension:

After Film transporting, unwinding and printing, the film is fed through a set of nip rollers. The nip/free rollers help to keep the film at a constant tension by providing even pressure on the film, thus keeping the dancer’s arm in the proper operating position.

During the process of unwinding, the film is unwound from the roll and passes over a dancer’s arm. The dancer’s arm is nothing but a weighted pivot arm located at the rear of the machine. The arm consists of a series of rollers. The arm moves up and down to keep the film under tension, while the film transports, which is controlled by sensors. There is also an automatic film tracking sensor that ensures the film will not wander from side to side as it is moving.

Film Cutting:

Applicable only for multitrack machine: After the free rollers, the film proceeds into the cutting section called the slitter assembly. During this step in the process, based upon how many lanes the stick pack machine has, the large roll of packaging film is cut into that amount of strips. These strips form the basis for creating the individual stick packs. As the film passes through the knives The film is still kept under tension and cuts with the help of a specially designed roller. As it is pulled through this assembly, the film is cut into individual strips of packs.

Stick Pack Forming:

The Individually cut films are then passed over over multiple forming tubes, As the cut film crests the collar on each forming tube, it folds around the tube so that the end result is a ‘stick pack’  which is long and narrow in shape with the two outer edges of the film overlapping each other for complete packaging. This part is also known as a folding collar in operator language. The forming tubes can be set up to create a lap seal or fin seal. A lap seal creates a flat seal by overlapping the two outer edges of the film. On the other hand, a fin seal marries the insides of the two outer edges of the film which creates a seal that sticks out, like a fin of a fish. Most of the manufacturers prefer a lap seal as it is considered more aesthetically pleasing and is economical as it uses less material than a fin seal.

Stick Pack Filling and Vertical Sealing:

Now it is time to put the product in the packaging. Once the film stops moving, a vertical sealer bar which is hot moves forward and makes contact with the vertical overlap on the film. The vertical seal bar presses itself against the forming tube which creates the vertical seal.

Horizontal Sealing and Cutting:

Then a horizontal sealing jaw table is set to move up and down according to the set length of the pouch. During this table draw movement product is filled in a formed tube. Then with the help of a horizontal sealing jaw, which closes to seal the stick pack that is the top portion of the filled pouch and the bottom of the upcoming one.

Horizontal sealing jaw is also fitted with a cutting knife which cuts and separates the pouch into individual one.

Stick Pack Discharge:

In some machines pouch cutting is done in the next station. After the product is filled into each stick pack, a knife blade then cuts the bag into individual packets. Finished stick packs drop into the outfeed chute which has a flap that opens and closes at predetermined intervals.

Conclusion:

Single Track stick packaging is growing in popularity as it is an economic solution for unitised packaging, easy to access for customers and uses less material hence also good for the environment. The global demand for stick packaging is increasing at a slow yet steady pace and its biggest users are the medicine and food industry.

Introduction

There isn’t any doubt that there are benefits to packaging ready-to-consume meals merchandise withinside the retort technique suitable pouch.

Generally, processing instances may be decreased with the beneficial useful resource of using as plenty as 50% in the evaluation of a comparably sized can, glass jar, or each different cylindrical container. There also are more benefits which encompass decreased delivery expenses and garage area for the empty containers. The pouch furthermore has the proper shelf appeal due to multicolor printing and a developing beauty with complete product data also.

There are many processing demanding situations withinside the usage of the retortable pouch in evaluation to a metallic can.

What Is Flexible Packaging?

Flexible packaging is a sort of packaging that is a product of polymers and may be formed to match the product.

Flexible packaging has many advantages, along with being lightweight, strong, and clean to transport. It’s moreover recyclable and can be found with logos, attractive designs, product detail information, or extraordinary designs. The hazards of bendy packaging are that it desires to be saved in a fab area due to the fact it is touchy to heat. It additionally has a shorter shelf lifestyle than inflexible plastics due to the fact it is much more likely to select out microorganisms or different contaminants while dealt with via way of means people.

What Is Rigid Packaging?

Rigid packaging is as its name moreover defined as now not without issues manipulated and regularly irreparable if the packaging yields if dropped or reviews a drastic extrude in temperature or pressure.  Rigid Packaging is regularly made from rigid plastics like high-density thick polyethylene or blanketed metals or glass. Metal cans or rigid plastic bins are heaps lighter in assessment to glass jars but are nonetheless several times heavier than flexible programs from the identical amount of product.

Why Choose One Over the Other?

Weight

Rigid Packaging:

Rigid packaging material is heavier than flexible packaging as it is made of thicker materials. For example paperboard boxes, tin cans, glass bottles, etc.

Flexible Packaging:

Flexible packaging material is lighter as it is made of lightweight materials. Some examples are paperboard boxes, cans, and glass bottles.

Size

Flexible Packaging:

The mild shape of flexible packaging makes storage and warehousing easy. It additionally simplifies the locomotion manner with courier transport offerings as you could easily deliver a better variety of merchandise because of its smaller convenient size.

Rigid Packaging:

Shipping merchandise packed in rigid substances like bottles may cost more, as it adds the material weight despite the fine transport associated with eCommerce, the full weight of the bundle increases.

Durability

Durability is one precise place wherein each flexible and rigid packaging have their benefits and drawbacks.

Rigid Packaging:

Rigid substances utilized in packaging are prepared in a way to defend the contents of the package from any harm, particularly the fragile ones. However, the flexible material itself can also succumb to harm when exposed to outside forces. For example, outside masses may lead to dents or scratches on Aluminium and Tin cans.

Flexible Packaging:

Flexible packaging substances are more long-lasting as they can’t be easily broken. No dents usually arise on those substances as they now no longer have a hard and fast form. Unfortunately, those substances can also face damage while poked with sharp objects. This would potentially damage the contents of the package deal as properly.

Customization

Flexible packaging

Flexible packages have greater customizable quality than rigid ones. You can conveniently, without facing problems, alternate the form of bendy substances to shape your product requirements.

Rigid packaging:

Additionally, branding will become a lot easier with flexible substances as several approaches to print your logo, product information, user instructions, or various other information. Doing the similar on inflexible substances isn’t the most convenient greater bulky however additionally prices greater.

Environmental Impact

Naturally, one would possibly assume that flexible materials are riskier to the environment as they are in large part made from plastics. However, many manufacturing industries are running toward making recyclable flexible materials According to America Flexible Packaging Association,

Flexible packaging:

“Flexible packaging requires a lot much less water and strength to manufacture and deliver and generates small quantities of greenhouse gases on its manner to the market.”

Rigid packaging:

The manufacturing techniques and recyclability of bendy materials make them more inexperienced than inflexible materials Results of the Material Based on the Product  Both materials have a selected sort of impact on customers based mostly on the sort of product. Flexible packaging offers transparency to products like cooking powders and clothes, making them much less complex to identify.   On the alternative hand, inflexible materials like glass bottles for perfumes deliver a style quotient and affect a higher quality. It offer price addition and might get the area of interest costs withinside the area of interest custom region also.

Conclusion

Irrespective of the shift in packaging and logistics, you want to decide on a packaging type that suits your product’s requirements. Weigh the specialists and cons of inflexible and bendy packaging and choose the right one. To learn more or get your hand on one head to https://shrutiflexipack.com/ now!

Retort Pouch Processing Process Overview – 1. Material Selection

The retort pouch material is a three-layer laminate that can be processed like a can, shelf-stable, and permits the benefit of frozen boil-in-the-bag products. It can be composed of an outer layer of polyester film, a centre layer of aluminium foil, and an internal layer of food grade  polypropylene. Material for retort pouches has to offer advanced barrier property of over protracted shelf life, seal integrity and toughness/puncture resistance, and have to face up to the thermal rigours of a retort process, which would possibly have temperatures as much as 135 °C (275 °F).
The gain of the retort pouch over a can is its flatter form in comparison to the spherical form of a can; thus, an uniform and much less warmth is needed to convey the temperature within side up to core of the product.

Retort Pouch Processing Process Overview – 2. Frigid package industry

One of the foremost benefits of retorting ready-meal products is that each meal and package are thermally processed together, which lets the product sterile. As stated previously, the conventional retorted packages are metallic cans, aluminium trays, glass jars processed in a steam atmosphere, thermally handled in steam or warm water (Tucker, 2006). These packing need to sustain in air overpressure from outside as well as the gases generated with inside the headspace of the package.

However, there are even packaging exceptions to this. The use of plastic-primarily based totally or laminated packaging substances may be changed to consist of a stress-touchy valve device. Typically, as soon as meal merchandise is thermally processed or retorted, inner % stress builds, and to keep away from packs bursting, air overpressure is carried out in the retort. However, in meal packs containing stress-touchy valves, as soon as inner % stress mounts to unacceptable levels, the only manner valve device opens to permit the discharge of gases or steam till the stress is relieved, upon which the valve closes again.

Innovations with inside the canning industry are limited through the converting needs of customers or as per various merchandise. Increasingly handy packaging strategies, increasing cost of raw materials and growing recycling costs have created new demanding situations for the canning industry too.

The ever-developing presence of retort pouches on grocery store cabinets suggests the developing reputation of this packaging layout with customers. A retort pouch is a unique package deal wherein the perishable meal objects are preserved through bodily and/or chemical means. It is a versatile laminate that could face up to thermal processing (Potter, 2008), and combines the benefits of packaging codecs inclusive of the metallic can and boil-in-bag.

Retort Pouch Processing Process Overview – 3. Pre-Heating & Vacuum Operation

The retort pouch filling system is just like can filling and calls for equal care and attention. Ready food is filled in pouches when it is at 70 to 80 degree centigrade once it is ready. The primary steps in retort pouch packaging are product filling, air elimination, sealing, traying, autoclaving, and cooling. Once the product is crammed into the pouch and the pouch is sealed then subjected to temperatures of 121.1°C with counter-strain so that the bloodless factor or slowest heating factor withinside the meals reaches the predetermined time-temperature integral (Brody, 2003). Once this temperature is reached, the product is cooled, labelled, and stored (Balachandran, 2002; Madhwaraj et al., 1992; Venugopal and Shahidi, 1998).

Pouches used for retorting can both be performed or composed of laminated rolls on full automatic packing machines. Preformed retort pouches are usually used and they may be crammed manually or via means of the usage of automatic filling machines. Sauces and curry merchandise, however, may be packed straight away in pouches that are made of laminated rolls which can be concurrently formed, crammed, and sealed (Yamaguchi, 1990).

In the case of merchandise which includes mixed contents, like full of solids, collectively with a few liquids, curry pastes are sealed by using a special purpose pouch sealing machine. Extreme care needs to be taken in the course of filling pouches to keep away from contamination of the seal area, considering this will bring about weak sealing. Duxbury et al. (1970) suggested that after a last fill stage five inches of the open pinnacle of the package deal to limit product infection of the seal area. Nughes (1971) indicates leaving a whole lot as one 1/3 of the pouch space empty for equal reason. Lampi and Rubinate (1973) suggested that a wide percentage of system-associated screw-ups become because of the infection of seal regions in the course of the filling operation. Schulz and Mansur (1969) indicated that steam flushing now no longer best wiped clean seal surfaces, however additionally eliminated residual air from the pouch.

Retort Pouch Processing Process Overview – 4. Cooking Operation

The term ‘retort pouch’ is used to explain a bendy or semi-inflexible package deal made from heat resistant laminated plastic, into which meals merchandise are placed, sealed, and sterilized at temperatures as much as 121°C. The ensuing product is then sterile and has best shelf stability.  The retort pouch has been advanced as an opportunity to metallic and glass for packaging of processed meals merchandise.

Retort pouches are utilized in numerous international locations for an extensive variety of processed ready-to-serve shelf-solid food-primarily based merchandise, which include stable meat packs, red meat curry, red meat stew, meatballs in tomato sauce, sauces, and soups. Laminated material used for retort pouch manufacturing range relying upon their precise application. The substances should be inert, heat sealable, dimensionally solid, and heat/pressure resistant (commonly 115°C–125°C). They ought to have low oxygen and water-vapour permeability and be much more sturdy to withstand penetration in the finished product with nutrients content and abuse for the duration of coping with storage (Kirwan and Strawbridge, 2003).

There are essential forms of pouches: gusseted and pillow packs. Gussetted pouches have an insert withinside the backside permitting them to stand in an upright position. They are taken into consideration weaker than pillow-fashion pouches because of heat sealing through 4 layers on the nook seal. However, gusseted pouches soak up much less area on the grocery store shelf and maybe put up for sale the product without a doubt withinside the upright position (Potter, 2008).

Conclusion & Key Takeaway Points

  • Reduced cooking instances or decreased sterilization instances that’s because of the cloth gauges utilized in pouches and its large floor region in step with unit quantity Improved sensory properties, stepped forward nutrition, quicker processing instances, decreased strength costs
  • No sharp edges and shortage of fragility eliminate final product damages (removes chance from can lid or damaged glass)
  • Pouches, empty and full, are lighter and absorb much less storage area than cans or jars, reduction of the distribution costs, extended utilization of the garage area. Empty pouches occupy 85% much less store area than any rigid packages
  • Environmentally pleasant flexible pouches require much less strength to manufacture, process, delivery, and shop than cans or jars, thereby minimizing the carbon footprint
  • A pouched product is commercially sterile, maybe eaten immediately from a pouch or served on dishes and shelf-solid at room temperature. Pouched meals may be heated quickly
  • The capability of serving unused portions, smooth training and establishing added comfort for households, much fewer meals waste, elderly- and infirm-pleasant, smooth establishing with reliability
  • Larger packaging going through printing region, rotogravure printing improved shelf and client enchantment and higher photo capabilities
  • Complete product evacuation improved yields, merchandise require much less brine
  • Conforms to all Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines.  Readiness for marketplace development

If a customer ever has been lured towards a product or been tempted to buy something purely based on how it looks from the outside, that would determine the importance of packaging, to the success or failure of a product.

Packaging ready to eat  food in flexible packaging or pouches is the most acceptable form of food preservation. Retorted pouches represent a unique combination of package, process, and product technology with potential economic benefits. Traditionally, tin containers have contributed to a large extent in building confidence in processed foods. The increasing awareness and aversion to accept other methods of food preservation, irradiation, and the like, have created a vast scope for retort processing of foods. The Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has done pioneering work in the field of retort pouch processing of various Indian foods using indigenous materials and equipment.

However, ideal packaging not only makes a product visually or aesthetically pleasing but also greatly enhances its functionality and utility. With recent advancements products are so much safer than they used to be and much better equipped to survive all transportation and shipping hazards or the ‘shelf life’ at a retail store.

One such packaging machine that is gaining popularity and seeing increased sales for the convenience and ease that it provides is automatic pouch sealing machines.

They can be used easily, are extremely simple, and guarantee superior quality of sealing. They can vary from very small and handy sizes to jumbo pouches.

The RTE food industry can benefit a lot from having an automatic sealing machine because packaging helps conserve many food items such as meat, cheeses, and many pre-made dishes with gravy that otherwise run the risk of getting contaminated before reaching the customers. Good quality sealing will not tear them during transportation.

Pouch Sealing machines are used in the packaging industry as they are much more affordable for packing than other materials.

Full automatic HFFS machines or PFS machines are out of budget for startups and need minimum processing capacity to afford these machines. But semi automatic bag sealing machines are very simple to maintain and cost-effective in comparison to other packing machines.

A number of different virgins, multiplayer, and co-extruded packaging materials such as polypropylene nylon, polyester cast polypropylene, and polyester aluminum foil cast polypropylene have been evaluated for their mechanical strength to withstand retort conditions at temperature up to 135oC, optimum barrier properties, compatibility with the food products and required shelf life of 12 months under ambient conditions. DRDO has developed various vegetarian and non-vegetarian food for the services. Some of the products include sooji halwa, upma, channa curry, chicken curry, mutton curry, fish curry, vegetable pulav, chicken pulav, potato-peas curry, mushroom curry, and much more. The technology for retort pouch processing of food has been transferred to 17 firms. Some of them are already supplying processed food to the armed forces. It is also being exported to the developed countries to cater to the food requirements of ethnic populations from the Indian subcontinent.

  • Single head for hassle-free operation
  • Integrated special cooling system
  • Optimized design for easy use
  • Pneumatically operated high-pressure sealing
  • 10 mm sealing width
  • Ideal for retort pouch packing
  • 300 mm sealing length
  • User-friendly consumable replacement
The optimal control theory was used to determine the optimum retort temperature profile for quality retention at a given level of sterilizing value in conduction-heating of foods in retortable pouches. The cook-value (C-value) was employed to describe quality changes. Optimization was considered to be a constrained optimal control problem with unspecified terminal time, and it was solved numerically, using the conjugate gradient minimization method. Optimum retort temperature profiles were determined for the volume average and surface C-values for browning reactions. Final C-value for volume average decreased by 10% as compared with that for optimum constant retort temperature, and the value for surface decreased by 30%. This method may be applicable to heat sterilization of canned foods as well.

No matter what the product or industry, automatic pouch sealing machines are a must for you!
